Items: 6 coins, and sometimes an Able Juice. They may give you a once again or lucky during battle.
Points: 2
Attack Pattern: They seem to split pretty evenly between regular attacks, and the poison tail attack.
Basic Strategies: Rat Funks can poison you, and are relatively weak, which makes them good targets early on in a battle. Mallow probably won't be strong enough to beat them even with timed hits, but Mario can.
Advanced Strategies: To block, press A just as they hit you with their tails.
You might want to equip antidote pins before entering the sewers, as this will prevent them from performing poison attacks on you, but poison attacks only last until the end of a battle in this game, so it may not be as important as you think.
Finally, because they sometimes give up "Once Agains", they should definitely be Mario's first target. He can often beat all of the Rat Funks and get in one hit on another type of enemy all in one turn!
