BACKGROUND: Buzzies are little black (or navy blue) beetles that infest the caves in various parts of Mario's world.
It is unclear whether Buzzy Beetles are members of the Koopa Troop, or just pests that get in Mario's way because he's invading their territory. While they have never been shown to have a clear alliance with Bowser, they do seem to cause trouble a lot.
The main reason they cause trouble is because they are usually quite hard to defeat. Fireballs can't hurt them, and other attacks usually only force them to hide in their shells for a few moments.
A variety called Hangin' Buzzies hang from the ceiling and fall on prey when it's directly below them. The thing that makes these Buzzies foolish is that they can kill other Buzzies on the ground.

EVOLUTION: Buzzies haven't changed a lot since the original Super Mario Bros. They have learned to climb on ceilings, and they seem to have gone from having black skin to brown, but their overall appearance remains the same.
Probably the most significant evolution in the Buzzy is the emergence of a few new varieties, although none of them had very long life spans.
The worst development in the evolution of the Buzzy is what happened to it in Super Mario World (that game changed a few classic enemies). He became susceptible to the spin jump, so even regular Mario could defeat him! Buzzies also had tan-coloured skin for the first time in this game.
Buzzy returned in the Paper Mario games. Like all of the characters in that game, he has a very "illustrated" look. His feet have grown a lot, and he has a more expressive face - but the latest incarnation looks quite good.
